The United States exported 2 million cars in 2017, most of them on large 'roll on, roll off' vessels, although many by train. These massive ships can carry upwards of 5,000 cars and it goes without saying that many of these cars arrive damaged. The trains involved use specially designed rolling stock to transport hundreds of cars across the country. Occasionally, individual shippers will stuff a car into a dry box container, often with disastrous results.

While most of the damages are not catastrophic on the vessels and trains, cracked windshields, dents, and scratches can affect the underwriter's bottom line. These damages are often caused by the securing straps, movement of other vehicles, and rough movement of the vessel or train. Although less and less common, thefts do occur at the ports.
